My Personal Goals for 2010
I am mapping out my plans for next year. I turn 40 mid 2010 and I want to make it a year to remember. 5 years ago I told my friends that I wanted to climb Everest in 2010 but many talked me off the ledge and convinced me that it was too risky and that I would be better off playing Russian Roulette.
I am sharing my draft plans with you to seek feedback and also to ask for some help.
March 20th Diablo Trails Challenge 50KFor context: If I am successful I will have run the equivalent of 12 marathons in 6 months in extreme conditions. Each 50K run will take approximately 6 hours and I need to complete the 50 Mile race in under 12 hours. The final 100 Mile race has to be completed in 30 hours which would necessitate running day and night without sleep.
Would anyone be interested in joining my support crew to help me through the 100 Mile race? This would involve some moral support when I go insane and running some parts of the race beside me to help me keep pace. If you can run at all you are probably faster than I am so you only need to be fit enough to handle running short distances in high altitude (imagine a relay race of friends taking turns to run with me).
Would anyone local here in NorCal be interested in running some of the 50k Ultras listed above alongside me,sac michael kors? I am not running for placement. I just need to put time in on the hills.
Also, if anyone has advice for me who has done something as intense as this I am all ears. I need to learn more on energy, clothing, nutrition, hydration etc.
NEXT POST
Rodeo Beach Ultramarathon I am sitting at home feeling quite at peace and relieved that I completed it yesterday. I honestly had no idea if I could possibly run 50K as the furthest I had ever run was about 30 before that. I had no experience with regulating energy and hydration so I made sure I always had a full pack of water with gels and snacks between stations. I had a good amount of Salba in my porridge and smoothie before the run which I believe made all the difference. Or maybe it was the aerodynamic beard I grew for the day. The run started and hundreds of people cheered and started gunning for it. This is when I began my shuffle. I let almost everyone run ahead of me and I just took it very slow and steady. The first hill was long and grueling as it was still quite foggy and cold and the wind was blowing in our faces. I think I may have cursed it a few times. It was 25K (16 miles) and 3000ft of elevation gain. I completed it in 2 hrs and 50 mins (forgot to turn my Garmin off hence the extra couple of mins below). I got a new pair of running shoes (feet) for Christmas called the Vibram FiveFingers which is an alternative to running in bare feet. Recent scientific studies show that for most people running in bare feet (or close to it) is much better for joints and muscles. There is an interesting section in Born to Run that highlights most of the modern runner's ailments are due to running in fancy running shoes with big padded soles. I started training in the new barefoot shoes recently and it changes the style significantly and as a result I have been using different muscles in my calves. Instead of breaking myself in I went for a decent run in the mountains earlier this week in them. The experience is phenomenal but my muscles have been worked over all week. I say this to start the post as from the moment I started running today (in normal shoes) my calves were in agony. I almost stopped after the.
